The Secret to a Wedding Cake that Feels Like Autumn.

Who doesn't love a crisp fall day?

Autumn always reminds me of being a kid. It takes me back days spent in corn mazes and pumpkin patches.

As the weather gets cold, we find ways to get cozy. Autumn is for fire pits, warm drinks, and people you love.

It's a season to be bundled up on the porch, watching leaves drift in the wind.

To say I love it is an understatement.

That's why I was so happy to participate in a fall-themed photo shoot at Providence Cotton Mill.

The event was full of fall colors: the rustic redbrick mill, the muted color pallet, the soft pink and orange floral arrangements.

I know it's only the beginning of September, but making the wedding cake for this shoot has given me severe autumn cravings.

I even considered breaking out my sweaters and pumpkin decorations. LOL.

Even though I can't get into the full swing of fall just yet, this event let me pretend for a while.

As I started work on the wedding cake, I realized I had a problem.

The color pallet for this shoot was begging me to put fall leaves on the cake. But the style of the shoot was too modern for actual leaves. I needed to create a design that had the feeling of fall leaves without the shape.

I wasn't sure how I would do it, but I knew where to start, color.

With a small two-tiered cake as a foundation, I mixed up a soft earthy pink buttercream as the base layer. Then I started experimenting.

I ended up with three different shades of ochre, one brown and white.

Using a pallet knife to create offset brushstrokes, I Layered the colors creating the impression of leaves.

I finished the effect with some gold leaf and a few dried flowers.

The cake looked great, but the event scenery completed the effect.

Couched in sandy beige rugs, white linens, and dried pompous grass, the rich ochre and gold leaf popped.

Each element of the shoot complemented the others.

The gold in the place settings, the ochre in the table runner, the gentle pink candles mirroring dried pink roses. Even the charcuterie board and stationary felt autumnal.

Standing in the middle of that gorgeous open-air hall, I felt the need to get cozy and drink something warm.

This shoot was so fun, and I loved working with so many talented people. I am super excited as we head into the fall season and can’t wait to make more autumn-inspired cakes.

Do you love autumn as much as I do? Are you planning a fall wedding?

If you said yes to either of these, I would love to make your wedding cake. Or any other kind of cake you need :)
